1999 mitsubushi montero sport 4x4 automatic
 engine start but wont idle, sometime it would
 idle for approx. a minute or two. i can drive
 with foot on gas pedal and stop with foot on gas pedal and brake

Jay,
Sounds like your car may just need a tune-up.  Get the battery and alternator checked, replace your spark plugs, plug wires, check your ignition coils.  Also replace your fuel filter, air filter, and PCV valve.  You should have your timing, your belts, and your fuel pump checked.  You may even have luck running a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through your system.

These items need regular maintenance, and need to be checked regularly.  If none of these items have been checked/replaced with the past 3 years, now is a good time to have it done.
