Mitsubishi Repair: transmission, cv joints, cv boots
QuestionHello, I have a 92' Eclipse, 2.0L DOHC, GS, automatic. I have a problem when I slow down, the car jerks, it feel like the tranny shifting down. If I put it in 2nd gear and drive it doesn't do it. The only thing I could think it is is the CV joints, both of the dust boots were torn when I got the car, so I cleaned, regreased them, and put a split-boot on them but it didn't help, the left-side still clicks when I turn and it seems like you can hear the balls rattling when I drive. In the repair manual in the troubleshooting it says if it jerks after coasting its the CV joints. So what do you think ?
AnswerGary,
If the CV joint is shot, you will experience bucking when you're turning. The grinding noise may be caused by a worn wheel bearing. Both of these problems can initially be caused by a bad ball joint. Even a slip-boot can last if the ball joints and tie-rods are in good shape. But bucking, clicking and grinding are all signs of a bad CV joint. You'll have little options other than getting it replaced. Most mechanics will suggest replacing the entire axle. In many ways, that's the best option you could take. A new axle comes with new CV joint, new CV boots, and will save you more money in labor costs overall.
Good luck!
