Motorcycle Repair: more zip & louder pipes, personal preference, old bike

Question
My '70 electra glide, pulls out fine in first & cruises comfortably at 65 - 70, once I get it up to 4th, but in 2nd or 3rd, it feels sluggish.  What can I do to get more "oomph" in the middle gears?

Secondly, the bike is kind of quiet.  I would like it to have a little more of an aggresive sound.  What kind of pipes can I look for to do that?  Btw, I am probably NOT going to buy these brand new for a 40 year old bike.

What carb and cam are you running?
On the pipes, the sound is going to be a personal preference. What I think sounds aggresive you might not think so. Listen at different pipes and find somthing you like on another bike and then find out what the pipes are
