Motorcycle Repair: 1998 1200 Harley Sportster, negative battery cable, dead battery

I have charged the battery and my harley barley turns over but does not start.  I mean it sounds like a dead battery but my battery is new.  

Also, I seem to smell burning by the neg connection to the battery.  Please advise.

I have to tell you, your model is not my specialty but I would try tightening both ends of that negative battery cable, it this doesn't work I would replace the positive battery cable, I have seen the cables come apart under the insulation right where the terminal end is at the starter motor. Hope this helps you out.
