Motorcycle Repair: 85 Maxim Fast Idle, repair manual, carbs

I just bought an 85 Maxim.  It will Idle ok for about 2 or three minutes at about 800-1000 rpm.  then it jumps to 4500 rpm. I took it out for a ride before I noticed this problem and it started on the ride running constant at 4500 rpm the only time the engine would idle down was as I was letting the clutch out to start the bike after stopping.  Any idea what I can do to fix this

It sounds like your carbs need a tuning and synchronisation. This is a relatively inexpensive procedure or, if you have a service/repair manual and are handy with tools, something you can do yourself.
