Can you adjust the lever downwards as it is a little high for me?

Most motorcycle gearshift levers are clamped onto a splined shaft. You should be able to loosen the one pinch bolt that holds it in place, then gently pry/wiggle it off the splines. Then reinstall it in the position you want and tighten the pinch bolt.
