Motorcycle Repair: electrical, starter relay

i have a 1983 gs750es i replaced starter relay and the bike tries to start but the black and white wire that goes to the starter relay gets hot and melts any ideas

Sounds like the relay is shorting or drawing too much current for some reason. You should be able to test the relay by itself by just applying 12v to the contacts. If the wires get hot while applying power to the relay I'm thinking the relay is bad or its not connected right.
