Motorcycle Repair: fuel pump 83 honda shodow 750, fuel pump relay, 12 volt

fuel pump runs when connected direct to 12 volt source have 12 volts at pump connecter with key on about 8 while cranking motor. pump does nothing with key on or while cranking motor.any ideas?

There's a fuel pump relay that get's a signal from the coil and from the alternator that supplies voltage to the fuel pump.  I'd check the relay.  I just replace one on my 85 sabre with a automotive style relay because I didn't want to spend $60 on one from Honda.
