Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Kawasaki Ninja 600R (US edition), bike cranks, kawasaki ninja
QuestionI just bought the above listed bike and it won't start. This is what I've done so far.
Changed the plugs.
I hooked up the bike to a car battery and the bike cranks fine, but no start. Pulled the tank off and then sprayed starter fluid in carbs-- nothing, just cranking. Pulled valve cover off and pulled plugs. Spark plugs were changed to NGK DE8A. Checked for spark; its a nice blue streak. Even touch it myself and while it was a shock, it wasn't that bad-- not like a car. All plugs had a spark. Now, I didn't check compression, but did insert a wet tissue in each cylinder-- individally, and it pops out upon cranking. Took carbs off and sprayed starter fluid into each of the four intake boots. Nothing, just cranks. The spark from the left coil (#2 & #3 cylinder) is the same as the right coil (#1 & 4 cylinder). What possibly can this be. I ordered a manual but need to wait 10 business days. Help me please. Thanks, Anthony.

AnswerAnthony,
Sounds like you are checking the right areas. I really don't like starting fluid because it can damage plastic/rubber parts (most modern carbs) but it will run a engine for a few seconds. If you have a good spark, make sure the carbs are clean (carbs work allot better than starter fluid) good gas, air intake is not blocked, exhaust is not blocked...the basics. I assume it was running when you bought it, if not then you might have some timing/engine problems that require another series of tests. Hope this helped.
