Motorcycle Repair: starter relay and solenoid wiring, starter relay, starter button
Questionhey bro, i just had my top end rebuilt on a 1975 ironhead. i got it home, trailered it, and went to start it, burnt some wires for the starter utton to the relay, i replaced all the burned wires, and went to start it, i touched the grond to the battery, and it melted the wire from the relay to the solenoid, replaced it again, nad when i hit te starter button tis time it melted it again. im sure i ave them backwards or someting, i can send ya some pics if needed. the first time i touced the ground to te battery, it kicked over witout te key being in. man any elp would be appreceated. thanks bro. patrick
AnswerYou are going to have to get a wiring diagram and start tracing the wires out. If you are hookinig up the ground on the battery and burning wires, then you have a short to ground which you need to find. At the key switch, disconnect the ignition and lights wires and then test the system with a test light. It sounds like you have a problem with the ignition system which you need to find.
Good luck and happy riding
