with the battery cables unhooked, should the bike contune to run

no, bikes are different than cars and
I highly advise against running the
bike with the cables off the battery.
The ignition and charging circuits
are electronic and balanced with
the battery and other devices connected.
The computer module shuts down
when voltage is too low.
Check the charging voltage on the battery,
if it is low, test the battery, check the
fuses and check the stator output
directly from the engine.
