Motorcycle Repair: 1997 FLSTF wont run, flstf, mr wells

Mr. Wells,

 I own a 1997 FLSTF that has quit running.  Early last year it had a new camshaft put in it (the original cam bearing cracked).  Then, I rode it for 2500 miles with no problems.  Then I was riding and it started sounding like it was backfiring through the carb a little, and then it quit running completely, right on the highway.  Since it quit, it won't start.  It just backfires and coughs.  To my ear, it sounds like a timing problem.  Could this be the cam positioning sensor?  What do you think could cause this?

First, you need to determine if you are getting a good spark and fuel. Pull the plugs and holding one to the head, turn the bike over. Are you getting a good spark? Also, what color is the plug? Looking down the throat of the carb, when you twist the throttle, do you get a shot of gas?
