QuestionI have a 74 sportster with 19,900 original miles it was parked for twenty one years and I want to bring it back to good running condition. I have removed the tank and carburetor.
What is the best solvent to clean the tank.?
Where do I get a carburetor rebuild kit?
Should I rotate the engine with oil in the cylinders?
I am a fair mechanic on a car, but new to MC's
AnswerA bike sitting that long probably has rust on the cylinder walls as well as rusty bearings. the problem is even if youo get it running, it will probaby smoke and a bearing will go out. The best suggestion is to rebuild the motor so you dont have any problems.
I would flush the fuel tank with gas to get the junk out. If its rusty, then you need to seal it or it will just keep rusting.
Anyone that sells V-twin manufacturing products can get you a carb rebuild kit
Good luck and happy riding
