Motorcycle Repair: INFO ON MY YAMAHA VIRAGO 1986, float bowls, yamaha virago

my bike  stars everytime  but  if i shut the  choke  down  it  dies out  the  choke needs be on al the  time  it  stutters  as i  give it gas to  rev  and  gear  up  and  dies  when it  gears  down  
any  advice
i just got  the  bike 3 days ago   thanks for your  help

could be plugged jets in the carbs, but try
draining the float bowls and see if fuel is getting
to the carbs.
-The gas tank petcock valve could
be plugged up, or fuel filter, or bad fuel pump.
-If it runs briefly with the choke on, then it
is having trouble getting enough fuel.
If fuel is getting to the carbs okay then
the carbs may need to be cleaned, likely
the idle and main jets etc are gummed up.
