Motorcycle Repair: 82 yamaha xj750 maxim, compression stroke, consistant basis

QUESTION: i got on bike the other day and it spins over but will not start. it will backfire. getting fuel but coils spark erraticlly did not give any indication of any problems

ANSWER: Is there a possibility the wires are on backwards? Thats what this sounds like to me..

Answer
Ususally, the CDI wil either spark or it wont. I would look into possibly bad fuel, dirty carbs or somewhere other than irratic spark. Each individual cylinder or coil will spark on a NON-consistant basis. they will only spark on a compression stroke..
