Motorcycle Repair: v65 Magna, v65 magna, starter clutch

I asked the prior question about the kawi 900 but I noticed that you are a member of the magna riders assoc. so I thought you may help me diagnose a problem with my v65.
It is a 1984. When trying to start it everything turns but the engine only starts on occatision. Needless to say that means I can't ride it anywhere. When starting I hear a clacking-grinding sound coming from the clutch cover. I am assuming that something, possible the starter clutch is defective ????  Thanks again...

Hi Andrew,

Is it the starter that works infrequently? Or the engine only run once in a while?
Either way, when it is running, you hear a noise from the starter area, its more than likely a bad starter, if you look on www.partsunlimited.com Look for a dealer in your area, you should find one there for a TON less than a new OEM part.
