Motorcycle Repair: oil change, oil tank, softtail standard

i changed the oil in my 98 softtail standard 1340 eng when i added new oil it held less than 3 qt. to the neck drained out about half qt. ran around block checked oil rose well over mark .please help

You probably had oil sitting in the bottom end of the motor and when you started it the oil pump moved it back to the oil tank. Make sure when you change your oil that you let the bike run for a few minutes before changing it.
