Motorcycle Repair: Valve and Ignition timing, harley chopper, alignment marks
QuestionI just bought a '71 Harley chopper. The vin # coded out to be a Super glide FX 1200.
I would like to know the valve timing and the ignition timing for this model.
thanks
AnswerSorry it took so long, I've been out straight at the shop, it's now 11:15pm,just getting home. Valve timing is all done by alignment marks on your cam gear, breather gear, and pinion gear. Points gap is .018". Ignition timing is 5 degrees before TDC or 1/64" before TDC (retarded) and 35 degrees BTDC at full advance (7/16" BTDC) or with a strobe light at 2000 rpm on the front cylinder you should see a single vertical notch just to the right of center in the timing plug hole.
