Motorcycle Repair: 2002 Raptor 660, clutch adjustment, clutch springs
QuestionAfter replacing my chain and both sprockets, I tested the new components with a test run while lifted on a jack stands. I've never run the quad on the stands before. I noticed while testing a "shutter or chatter" noise at low speeds. I validated that the sprocket alignment and chain tension was correct. After testing further, I discovered the noise was present only when the clutch was release 100%. Pulling the clutch lever in 50% eliminated the noise. The front-end is dismantled for new bushing, so I can't test ride. Does this sound like an issue within the clutch assembly? I've had no issues previous with the clutch performance.
Thanks
AnswerHi Mike,
It's possible, though I doubt there's a problem with the clutch. Check clutch adjustment.
I suspect a lack of suspension ride sag may contribute to the sounds you hear. Wait until the front end is assembled and test ride the ATV.
If the noise exists with a rider on board, inspect clutch plates for evidence of wear.
Like drive chains and sprockets, always replace metal plates, fiber plates and clutch springs as a set.
