Motorcycle Repair: front wheel removal, fender rail, brake calipers

Question
I bought a chrome front fender rail for my 2006 V-star classic.
I would like to remove the front wheel to make it easier to get it on. Do you have to remove the brake calipers or will the front wheel slide off after removing the axle. Or could you explain how it is done.
