Motorcycle Repair: yamaha xt 550 1982, yamaha xt 550, gear case

Question
it had a oil prob and i found out it had a crack on the gear case,it has a part in the case this i dont know what it does or how to hook it back up, it goes to the engine,it will start in neutral but when i put it in 1st it turns off,and when i try 2nd it grinds,the only thing i took off was the case so i dont know why it would grind.
