Motorcycle Repair: 1991 Yamaha fzr 600 tach, yamaha fzr 600, 1991 yamaha fzr 600
Questiona friend of mine bought this bike a few years ago and the tach never did work. he finally pulled it out of the instrument cluster and relized it had a bad resistor(r5). from what i have been told it was the it was a 51ohm resistor and it was custom made for these. i put in a smaller one 47ohm and now the tach only moves to around 3500 rpm. with all that said do you know where i can get any information on these tachs as far as a schematic or a print out of the pcb so i can figure this out.
thanks for your time-
todd
AnswerHi Todd,
I don't have any resources for such. The factories do not provide this type of specs, even to dealers.
Consider having a electronics tech or engineer inspect the resistor. They have tools and catalogs that may enable them to identify the component resistor and match it.
Example: I found a $12 chip in the MCM Electronics catalog that was matched to my 1988 GSX-R alternator's unmarked defective chip. Otherwise, the fix was to replace the entire alternator. The OEM replacement cost $640 back in 1990.
