Motorcycle Repair: chain & sprocket, rear sprockets, stock replacement
QuestionHi, I have an '02 Suzuki Marauder. I want to get lower rpm's on the highway and want to change the sprockets and chain as a set. What would you recommend for the front and rear sprockets? It currently has a 15 tooth front and a 48 tooth rear sprocket. Should I keep the front at 15 teeth and go down in the rear? As for the chain is a stock replacement o.k. or get something else. Thanks.
AnswerHi Tony,
I suggest changing the rear sprocket to a 45 for more top end (lower rpm) at highway speeds.
Changing the front sprocket will affect engine rpm at all speeds.
Sprocket ratio is 3:1 meaning make three point changes to the rear and one poit changes to the front. Changes otherwise are fruitless.
Always replace the chain and both sprockets as a set. These parts wear together. An old sprocket will quickly wear a new chain and vice-versa. $$$
