Motorcycle Repair: electrical, shively, electrical equipment

Question
I have a 1983 yamaha virago 500 and a couple days ago that tachometer went up and down multiple time just after start up.  After that i shut off the bike and now it wont start and when i turn the key to on not even any of the lights come on, nothing, not one piece of electrical equipment will turn on.  I've tried to jump the battery but i think the problem is more than that.  Can you give me some help?

Have you checked the fuses?
