QuestionI am having a problem with my '85 Honda Nighthawk 650 starting. I never had this problem before I got new tires installed. The tech at the tire shop says it's my battery. I purchased the battery a little over a year ago. It starts up fine if I bump start it. Fires right up. What do you think? Should I get a new battery and take the old one back to the place where I purchased it, Or could it be something else.
I really appreciate your help as this is my main transportation.P.S. The bike is beautifully kept and in showroom condition! Thanks, Benjamin
AnswerHi Benjamin,
"....I am having a problem with my '85 Honda Nighthawk 650 starting. It starts up fine if I bump start it...."
The battery is probably not fully charged or is unable to reach and maintain a full charge. Test the battery and verify it's condition. Use a multimeter to check voltage, and use a hydrometer and check specific gravity of individual cells. Charge or replace the battery as necessary.
Motorcycle batteries that last three years have had a long life. Unlike car and truck batteries, motorcycle batteries do not last as long as they are smaller and do not receive the constant charge-discharge cycling.
Avoid economy brand batteries-we get what we pay for.
Never jump start a motorcycle battery from a car or truck battery. Both are 12VDC systems, but car/truck battery electrical current is much higher and may damage MC electrics.
Is the battery under warranty after a year? Check it.
