Motorcycle Repair: Compression Limiter, kawasaki vulcan 1500, kawasaki vulcan 1500 classic

Is there a diagnostic test to check the compression limiter, or do I have to remove the motor and visually inspect it?  This is on a 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic.

Jeff.. now I know what you are working on, I can check some online info for a possible answer, even though this is not my brand or era.... I do know if you need to take the heads off the motor has to come out of the chassis.

I checked my online reference and don't see anything listed for a decompression valve system in the microfiche.
