Motorcycle Repair: drive chain, suzuki bandit, chain sprocket
QuestionI have a 2002 Suzuki Bandit GSF600s. I bought it in August of 2004 with no miles on it. I now have 4000 miles on it and noticed that the drive chain was lose so I tightened it to the recommended 1 in, slack. I followed the instructions in the owners manual and made sure the rear axil was aligned by the marks swing arms. However, now when I ride I hear a rattleing or a rubbing type noise near the front sprocket. I then took a closer look and it appeared to be where the drive chain was entering the casing for the front sprocket.
I was wondering what that could be and how to correct the problem.
Thanks

AnswerHi Jeff,
Take more slack from the chain to prevent slapping as it enters the cases. A small amout of slack removed should correct the problem.
Chains do not wear evenly. Check for tight spots in the chain. Always replace chain and both sprockets as a set. A worn sprocket will quickly wear a new chain, and vice versa. Keep chain well lubricated with recommended lubricants.
I'll send chain/sprocket information files to your email addy.
