Motorcycle Repair: elec. sys., regulator rectifier, rec connections

1986 gl1200 sei i replaced alt. & volt reg. it charges at 14.5 and the volt reg. gets very hot.could i have something wired wroung. thanks for your help. "t"

Hi Bobby,

The regulator/rectifier is designed to produce heat. This is how the charging system purges excessive charging voltage.

The stator problem on that model year was a factory warranty job. It helps to solder the altenator and reg/rec connections direct. Use dielectric grease on all electrical connectors.
