Motorcycle Repair: Honda CM400, honda cm400, storage unit
QuestionChris, I have a 1981 Honda CM400. I had trouble with it when I took it out of storage this spring. It would not start, not even turn over. I bought a new battery, charged it all up, and still nothing. I was able to drift start it and ride it home (it was in a storage unit for the winter). Once home, I let it sit for a few days. I went out and jiggled as many wires as I could find, and it suddenly started. It ran fine for almost 2 months. Now it won't turn over again. I checked the battery, and it is fine. I jiggled wires again, but no luck this time. The bike has sat out in the rain this year for the first time since I've owned it (4 1/2 years). I don't know if that makes a difference, but I know it doesn't help. I am moving in a few weeks (the bike will be garage kept again) and I need to get this thing started to move it. Any ideas where I should start? Thanks in advance. Joe
AnswerHi Joe.
You have a couple of problems here. First is the fact that the bike sat in storage. You may need the carbs properly cleaned out. Second, you have a shorted circuit on the bike, somewhere in the ignition circuit.
Check the wiring every where from power to sparkplugs. It could be a loose or dirty connection, loose/bad fuse or a broken or shorted wire.
That is where the problem really lies.
Good luck.
