Nissan Repair: 2001 Nissan Sentra Automatic, planetary gear set, nissan sentra

I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra, automatic transmission. When shifting into park or neutral from drive, there is a grinding sound. This sound persists in park and neutral, but goes away if I switch back to drive. The lights dim when there is a grinding sound. There are no codes that the car gives. any ideas?

Sounds like the transmission is having issues with either the planetary gear set or the parking pawl.  A transmission shop can tell you for sure.  Also, there are transmission codes that they can read to help pinpoint the issue.  These cannot be accessed with a normal code reader.
