Nissan Repair: Service engine light, but no problem detected, diagnostic computer, autozone

Hi, I am looking to buy a 1998 pathfinder but the service engine light is on.  I ran a diagnostic computer on it and it said "pass" and that there was no code or error.  So I pressed erase as to get the light off but the computer said there was no code to clear and the light remains on.  What should I do about this.

There is a problem for the light to be on.  I have six different scanners since some work with some cars and not others.  Yes, it plugs in but it would not read.  My brother had a Cadillac and that car only liked certain scanners.  I had one to read codes and another to clear them.  Try a different brand of scanner.  Autozone or Checker will read the codes for free.
