QuestionLately, the fluid in my coolant tank was empty. I refilled it, drove about 10 miles, and when I checked the tank the next day it was empty again. I haven't driven it since. One of the mechanics I spoke to told me that if I had a timing chain it would be more expensive to fix. How can I troubleshoot this and what should I be aware of? Thank you.
AnswerHi Cynthia -
I don't know how the timing chain is related to the coolant, however this is what I would like to ask you to do:
First of all, are you losing coolant on the floor? Do you see a puddle under your car? If so, get back to me with info on where it is at, i.e., middle, drivers side, passenger side?
If you cannot find a leak, open the radiator at the cap (engine has to be cold!), and take a pressure tester. This will pressurize the system as if you were driving for a few minutes and if there is a leak, it should appear.
If you do not have access to a tester, open the radiator cap cold engine, fill to the top with coolant, and simply run the car for a few minutes to operating temp., then check for leaks.
Let me know how this goes.
look forward to hearing from you -
