Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Altima, Power Steering pump, engine oil leak, power steering leaks
QuestionHi,
I have several leaks from my car. When I went to a mechanic shop, they couldn't figure out where the leak originates. They just recommended to replace Power steering pump, pressure hose, return line and fluid. However, even with these leaks, I didn't get/see "Oil leak" inside the dashboard (near the speedometer). As a second-opinion, another mechanic specifically mentioned about distributor O-ring leak. Are they related? If it is really bad, shouldn't I get "Oil leak" signal? If it is still worse, can you recommend which problem should I take care first? Am I looking at several thousand dollars of repair? (I am based on San Diego)
I really appreciate your time for your suggestions.
Thanks,
AnswerHello -
Unfortunately oil leaks do not cause the engine light to come on, unless the leak is so bad that it empties your crankcase.
I would start by cleaning your engine. Run the engine and see if you can see oil drips or runs anywhere. Yes, the distributor o-ring would be a source of an oil leak too.
Most likely causes of an engine oil leak:
Oil sending unit
valve cover gasket
Distributor oring
For the power steering - leaks are rarely caused by the pump. Check the rack and pinion (inner tie rod end seals) and the pressure side hoses.
Hope this helps -
