Nissan Repair: Nissan Axxess transmission, nissan axxess, torque converter

Question
While driving up a slight hill, my wife's 90 Axxess auto. seemed to kick out of gear,{just revving,like it was in neutral) I switched gears but nothing happened.It shifts and the engine changes revs slightly but wont move.
I topped up the fluid (less than 2 liters) no change, fluid doesn't smell burned, but I'm afraid we neglected changing fluid. Any idea on things I can try?

Sounds like the torque converter has blown or the pump has failed.  I would not drive it or rev the engine as it will do more damage to the transmission.  Have it taken to a shop for diagnosis and repair.  I do not think a fluid change would have prevented this.  The car is 18 years old and if it is the original transmission you have done very well.
