i have a 1997 Nissan maxima im trying to find my neutral safety switch.

The neutral safety switch should be under the shifter.  If not, it is on the transmission where the shift cable connects to it.  I can't remember on your particular year.  But, those are the two places they are installed.  Purchase the new one and you'll know for sure...
