i HAVE TWO BROKEN MAINFOLD STUDS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE ENGINE . Is it necessary to drill out the stud and tap them out . Do you pull the head or can it be done by lowering the engine .

It is easier to pull the head and do the work.  Yes, they have to be drilled out and then new studs inserted.  I have done many and drilled them oversized and used Heli-coils and larger bolts.  That requires drilling the manifold a little larger too.  But, it will never break again.  Newer Maxima cars have larger studs for this reason.
