Nissan Repair: Nissan Maxima tramsmission, nissan maxima, bearings

I have a Nissan Maxima 300 SE 1994 about 166000 km. While driving it at about
90 km per hour just under 2000 rpm in cruse the gear box sounds rough
running.... Also I have noted that it makes the same grinding noise as you pull
away.  All the other gears sound quiet.

The transmission is known for bearing problems and that is what you have.  You could go with synthetic to quiet it down but you will need to replace the main gear bearings in the future.  It is a pain to get out but that is what is required to change the bearings.  Do not feel bad as they all eventually wear out since the engine is so powerful.
