Nissan Repair: 98 Pathfinder clicking/rattle, rear axle seal, belt tensioner
QuestionI have 1998 Pathfinder 4x4, V6 150,000ish miles. I just replaced a couple belts that had dry rot and it is the best my car had sounded since I bought it. But about a day later some of the clicking/rattling has returned. It happens right when I accelerate and get louder up to about 20mph and then starts over up to 40ish but I don't hear it at highways speeds anymore. Oh, I also have a rear axle seal leak, I don't think that has anything to do with it but what do I know?
I am about to take a long trip in my car and I just don't want it to be something that is really wrong or dangerous that I just neglected.
AnswerAllie,
Check the idler tensioner pulley for the noise. Also, the belts might not be tight.
The axle seal is an easy fix. Just a matter of taking the axle out and replace the seal and then refill the gear grease.
I would check the belt tensioner before a long road trip to make sure it is not going out.
