Nissan Repair: 87 maxima loss of power, glowing exhaust , running rough,, alternator test, power car

Driving down the road, running good, sudden loss of power . car will not move under its own power .water temp went up after noticed loss of power. Exhaust from engine to cat glowing red .

Either the alternator is not putting out enough voltage or the converter is melted shut.  I would do the alternator test first to see if it is putting out 14.2 volts first.  If not then replace the alternator.  If it is the converter is melted shut.
