QuestionHello,
I read your advice on the 1992 Nissan Sentra (posted 12/16/04) and I think I have the same problem with my 1992 Nissan Maxima SE Automatic (it has 160,000 miles). The engine starts up fine and runs great. After I changed the motor oil 2 months ago, I start having the problem. I realize I put more oil than I normally would - 5.5 quartz. After the problem occured a couple of times, I drained out 3/4 quartz, thinking the problem would go away. It didn't.
The Problem: I would be driving and the engine feels normal and all of a sudden, my rmp drops, the engine feels like it's going to stall. Then I step on the gas peddle harder, but it dosen't seem to respond. I had to pull over to the side of the freeway, turn off the ignition and restart. The engine starts immediately and idles normally. Sometimes it drives fine for the next 1/2 hour before the problem reoccurs, other times, shortly after I shift into drive.
Repair History (I'm the proud orginal owner):
1. Car never been in an accident
2. At 148,000 miles, changed out all 6 fuel injectors
3. Tune-ups at regular interval (30K miles)
4. Last oil change was 2 months ago
Help! Please advise how to fix this problem. I prefer to do it myself if it's not too dificult. Any insights would be greatly appreciate. Thanks.
Mike
AnswerI bet it is the distributor. I did the Stanza that I have and it was oil in the distributor. It would not ahve been caused by too much oil as a half of a quart is not going to do anything to the car. Remember, if you overfill the oil by over a quart there is a chance of the crank whipping it up into a foam and the air bubbles would trash your bearings as air won't lubricate the engine. Just take the distributor apart and see if it has oil in it.
