QuestionI have a 99 Buick Regal GS with a 3.8L SC motor, automatic transmission. Lately we have been experiencing issues with the key not turning to the lock position to remove the keys. This is very random. 3 out of 10 times we can turn the key to lock and remove them, the other 7 times we have to wait. We can shut the car off, but the electrical stays on until we hear a small "click" in the dashboard (sometimes 10-20 minutes later) and we can turn the key to off position and remove them. I thought maybe it was the ignition relay and haven't tried pulling/replacing it yet. Any suggestions?
AnswerHi
In most likelyhood, it is the shifter assy.
When you put car in Park, there is a parl lock switch integrated into the shifter. It sends a small voltage to a small actuator located under the key cylinder, which releases the key. (Part is calld a Park Lock Atcuator)
I have replaced ALOT more shifters for this problem than the actuators.
I would remove the center console and check all the wires/connectors for the shifter.
If all OK I would HIGHLY suspect the shifter assy.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck
