By reset, if you mean erase fault codes and turn off the engine light, it is necessary to connect a scan tool.
Some vehicles have a few self resetting codes, such as when the gas cap is left off. That will reset itself after a certain number of start and run cycles.
But most need to be erased by the scan tool, and if the problem that caused the code isn't corrected, the light will soon return.
