Oldsmobile/Buick Repair: 99 Buick LeSaber, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

my car will start and idle fine until I put it in Reverse or Drive and then it will backfire and quit... what could it be?

Sorry this is so late...I was out of town taking care of some parent plans.
Could be that your torque converter clutch solenoid is stuck, locking the converter, but transmissions are not my area.
A dirty fuel filter, or low fuel pressure could also do that, as well as a vacuum leak...possibly the brake booster. Try it without your foot on the brakes.
