Pontiac Repair: 92 Pontiac Grand AM, crankshaft sensor, engine cranks
QuestionI have a 92 Pontiac Grand Am 3.3 Liter. I was driving along and the car just died. Tried to start it and it cranks but won't turn over. I inspected the fuel filter and its fine. Had the coils and ignition module checked and the checked fine as well. I was told to remove one spark plug and try starting it to see if there was any spark, which there was no spark. I was told it might be the crankshaft sensor. If you think it might be that how do i get to it to replace it.
AnswerHey Todd:
It can be a lot of things. If it has no spark on all 3 coils then it either a crank sensor,ignition module or a power/ground issue to the module. The most likely cause is a crank sensor on that engine but with out testing it I can't tell you for sure. That engine has a pretty complex ignition system for it's time. it's a pretty in depth test process to determin if it the sensor or not. You may want ot get a repair manual for that car and follow the charts for engine cranks but will not start. To answer your question the sensor is behind the front harmonic balancer. you need a special tool to remove that balancer and it's bolted to the front of the engine timing cover. Hope that helps. Good luck :}
