RV Repair: onan generator 6.5 kw 1986, starter switch, test tools

Question
Generator runs well as long as I hold starter switch down, when I release starter switch  the power to fuel pump fails and motor dies at the same time.

That generator has a run relay ,that has to close in order to keep the unit running.The relay gets its orders from the rectifier, and it sounds like their not "speaking".
It really isn't a job for those without the right test tools.
Time to see the repair shop.
