What engine do you have?  Briggs and Stratton?

I believe you may have the 5 or 9 amp regulated or Tri-circuit.  If you have a regulator the diode will be inside the regulator.

Is the charging system not charging?  Did you verify with a multimeter?

Make sure you dis-connect and clean the battery terminals and cable end with a wirebrush...I have fixed a lot of charging problems just by cleaning the connections...even if they look clean, clean them anyway.
