Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): valves, john deere model, steel gears
QuestionI have a john deere model 445 the engine is a kawasaki 22 hp v twin the valve train is not working and i cant find an engine diagram so i am thinking a broken timeing chain cause neither side is working what drives the valves and where can i get an engine diagram thanks
AnswerThat engine has no timing chain the cam drives directly off the crankshaft, and is timed by marks being aligned on both the crankshaft, and camshaft to each other. That engine has I believe replaceable cam gears instead of like the Honda that the gear is built into the cam. They have steel gears on some, and plastic on others. I bet yours is the plastic one, and blew the teeth off it. Go to this site to see the break down, Tom : http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H
