Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Sprocket Removal, mower blades, reel mower
QuestionThank you for the service you provide. I hope that you can help.
I am having difficulty removing the sprocket from my 17" MkhlcLane reel mower, model17-3.5RP-7-SP. I have removed the set screw from the sprocket but the sprocket won't slide off the shaft. Is there anything else that needs to be removed? I need to remove the sprocket in order to attach an adaptor to sharpen the mower blades.
AnswerMake sure there is not a second set screw...usually there is only one.
The sprocket is seized to the key and shaft...happens all the time. You can use a bearing seperator tool and a gear puller to remove the sprocket. You can try soaking with PB Blaster for a few days to see if that helps. Lightly tapping the sprocket with a small hammer and punch will help the PB Blaster soak into the key/shaft.
