Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda HR215 Cam Gear Alignment, cam shaft, cam gear
QuestionI have dissembled my Honda HR215 engine which is a GXV-140. How would I know that the cam gear is aligned with the crankshaft gear if there is not a marking on the crankshaft gear? I removed the washer that sets on top of the crank gear and looked close to the whole gear and I don't see even a hint of a marking on that gear. The cam gear has a nice visible dimple but not the crank gear. Anyway is there a way to determine alignment without using the indicator marks? Below is a link to the pic, you can use the zoom function to get a better view.

AnswerYou can get real close by watching for valve overlap.
Are there two marks on the bottem of the cam gear that need to be flush with the top edge of the head (mating surffice of valve cover). If so, the key way on the crank needs to be turned up inline with the cam shaft.
I read on another site where there is a small mark on the crankshaft. Maybe a flashlight might help to identify any marks on the crank.
