If the engine is used on a mower then just go get a used Kohler or Briggs regulator and hardwire it in place...I would solder the connections.
Regulators are not magic, but some have an extra wire for voltage sensing. I use Yamaha regulators on my Honda motorcycles as the Yamaha units can be found on Ebay for $20.
FYI, the alternator puts out AC voltage and the regulator coverts this AC to DC. How many wires are coming off your alternator?
